As I know it's obvious from the title but I have decided to start writing my personal statement rather early, just to get a head start with it all.
Although the majority of Drama Schools do not need personal statements they do ask for information about your successes and plans for the future in their application forms so I think that in writing the personal statement (I'm going to refer to it as P.S from now on as I'm getting tired typing it out and my dyslexic is already going weird today as it is.) for the minority but then refer back for the rest to see what bits I can copy and paste in.
Talking about copying and pasting this is mine and although you can get ideas for this for your own if you are writing one but do not even think about using it as your own, as UCAS and CUKAS (the drama version of UCAS) will find out!!
Also I will copy and paste the guideline on how to write a P.S from the CUKAS website to give you an idea of how you need to set it out - but I'll also put it on the monologue page, just so you can refer back to it easier :D - but yeah this is mine at the present and comment below and tell me what you think about it, or email me if you have one and you want me to check it over, not for spelling mistakes; but more pointers of detail.
Right I'm going to stop talking now as I've said far to much already... Here it is:
P.S draft...
I don't think there are any words to explain the reason I want to act. I’m sure that if I were Shakespeare
would simply just make one up. Yet to me to sum up the tumble of emotions I feel when I walk onto a stage and become a new part of myself is almost impossible.
Although I have been attending drama workshops since the age of 5 I have only recently realised that acting is my true passion and I would truly love to do it day in and day out as a profession. Despite the fact that I have never done drama as an academic subject I have been doing LAMDA examinations in verse and prose since the age of seven and after receiving a ….... in my Gold exam I am now studying for my Diploma on how Temptation has shaped the theatre and literature. As acting has never been in my academic curriculum I have used my social life to try and expand my acting experiance for example I have set up a blog called “I wanna be an Actor.com” where I write about auditions which I have been doing, monologues that I have chosen and how I get into the character for the parts and also the experiences I am going through as I work to try and achieve my goals. Also I last summer I took part in a summer course “Acting with text” with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland so as to get a feel with working with difficult text.
I also do several other subjects at A level, Maths,Textiles and Politics - I have a firm belief that to truly understand people you need a broad range of learning. - Also that each of these subjects are essential to the learning the craft of acting. For example Maths is full of puzzles and challenges that only time can conquer, while politics delves into why people vote and how the system works.
With the drama school “Stage Struck” I have done several plays and productions with them; the latest being Noel Coward’s Fumed Oak; I played Doris, the main female part, a cantankerous middle age woman who causes despair for the husband – I really relished being able to portray Doris as the nasty people are the most fun to play and as it being a black comedy, it challenged me to understand how the words could have subtle meaning in the context.
I like to think that I have tenacious approach when it comes to acting, for example a couple of years ago I entered the Hazel Grove Festival to perform a piece, due to the fact that it was my first time doing a festival I had not realised the preparation needed to strike a chord with the judges. As a consequence I came last. Not disheartened I worked harder on my drama and improved where fault could be seen, I went back the next year to not only to come first in my category yet also to succeed and attain the best overall performance prize. This readiness to “learn and improve” approach is spurred onwards by the fact that I am dyslexic and I struggle sometimes when first reading scripts to get the dialogue to come out correctly yet I will continue to hone and improve this as an acting student.
I would like to study acting at further education to gain the experience of the professionals, working up to productions with other students whom are just as passionate as me for the theatre, and I am greatly interested in learning different methods used by practitioners such as Stanislavski. I also see it as an opportunity to gain more confidence with my singing.
If I do succeed in becoming an actress then I would love to work in a Shakespearean actress as I love how his plays are both technically and beautifully crafted. My particular favorites being the Tempest and As you like it (The latter I had the great pleasure of seeing at the Royal Exchange a few years ago.) However if I am unlucky and don’t succeed I would love to either get into politics or business (I believe that the skills that I will learn at your school will be of great importance in both these carriers.)
I understand that getting into this industry is exceptionally difficult, and staying at the top of your game even harder. Yet to me, the stage is where I have felt most comfortable and most importantly, at home.
I know the last bit is cheesy but I like cheesy. Like Zac Efron in High School Musical, because he is HOT and cheesy, so it's fine.
Right bye now (i <3 u ;) .)
Terri ;D
